What it means to be Class Conscious

In our capitalist society there is a deliberate and ongoing veiled campaign to avoid any discussion of ‘class’.

The term working class is rarely used, and certainly not in a positive way. We are all encouraged to think of ourselves as, or aspire to become, middle class. As if being working class is somehow objectionable. That it lacks aspiration.

But there is no such thing as middle class. It is a made-up term, made up by our class enemy to give the illusion that if we work hard, or go to university, or agree to do our class enemy’s bidding (think of well-paid western media pundits who propagate the message that Israel has a right defend itself by enacting a genocide against the Palestinian people), we can get bumped up from the working class.

It is a device to create division within the working class so one wage slave, who may be better off financially than another, can assume a smug sense of superiority. It pits working class people against one another just like all the other made-up divisions do: race, age, sex, sexual persuasion, religion etc.

It’s bullshit.

There is only one distinction dividing the world’s people and that is class.

There are only two classes, the ruling class and the working class and if you and yours ever had to work to live, you are working class.

Those with money and power, those who don’t work but who own the land, the factories, the resources and us, those who control capitalist society, they are the ruling class. They make up no more than 0.000035% of the world.

When you are class conscious you understand this fact and whilst it may seem simple, the lifelong powerful drip feed of propaganda you are subjected to, makes you believe otherwise.

Do you think you live in a free and democratic society? That’s an illusion.

Do you think you can choose how to live your life? That’s a fiction.

Do you think you think for yourself? That’s a delusion.

Do you think that human nature is basically unkind and greedy? That’s indoctrination.

Do you feel depressed and hopeless about the future? That’s intended.

Being class conscious is an awakening.

  • Understanding the mechanics of capitalism using the science of Marxism (yes, science!) gives you faculty.
  • Studying the history of humanity from the perspective of dialectical materialism gives you hope.
  • Becoming an active, awake and proud member of the working class gives you power.

It is inevitable that we, the working class, will take power and socialism will prevail but the longer you prevaricate, the slower it will be to achieve and the more we and generations to come will suffer in the meanwhile.

We are all humans and the only difference that matters thereafter is the class that distinguishes us.

Remember, you are working class, we are all working class, and until we own the means of production, we will forever be at the tyranny of the ruling class. Your best and only defence is to wake up and join us, to understand class relations and to help us shake more working class people awake.
